What Are You Wearing?! Dressing from the Skin to the Skirt in the 1830's
Do you enjoy a good detective story? Historical clothing and accessories are wonderful clues into the lives of people from the past. Textile expert Paula Lochhead will help unlock the secrets of fabric, fiber, and fashion preserved by artifacts held at The Nashua Historical Society. Then, as if putting together a puzzle, Paula will explain how the pieces all fit together to create the attire women would wear in order to achieve the charming image of the well-dressed lady in the early 1800s, a time period known as the emerging industrial era.
Paula Lochhead, a former teacher of family and consumer science, is a dynamic speaker whose love of textiles is infectious! Come to the program even if you have never found clothing interesting before; this is really a great way to enjoy a story about the past. This program is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Refreshments will follow the program.
The program will take place in the comfortable library located in the Florence H. Speare Memorial Museum, 5 Abbott Street, Nashua, NH. The building is accessible with padded chairs, large bathrooms, an elevator between floors and a ramp inside from the free parking area off Crescent Street. Doors will open at 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening, October 29, 2024. There is no need to pre-register; this is a non-ticketed, free event.
