United Way of Greater Nashua Seeks Dedicated Tutors and Monitors for Learn United Program
NASHUA – United Way of Greater Nashua is calling on compassionate community members to become tutors and monitors for its Learn United program. With approximately ten students currently awaiting a match, there is an urgent need for volunteers who can provide critical academic support. The most in-demand subjects are Reading and Math, but students also need assistance in areas such as Science and Social Studies. Additionally, we serve English Language Learning students, so volunteers with patience and familiarity with other languages can be particularly impactful for these New Americans.
Why Volunteer?
More than 60% of students in Nashua struggle with reading, writing, and math at grade level. This is an opportunity to change lives, one student at a time. Our tutors and monitors serve as educational lifelines, offering personalized support that improves academic confidence and fosters a love of learning.
One heartwarming example of this bond comes from a dedicated tutor who, before passing away last year, helped a young girl learn to read. He proudly shared his student’s success with his family and nurses in his final days. His second student has since struggled to find another tutor to connect with as deeply, demonstrating just how impactful these relationships can be.
Who Can Volunteer?
- Tutors: Volunteers who guide students one-on-one in academic subjects.
- Monitors: Background-checked adults (18+) who supervise sessions to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Substitute Monitors: Standby volunteers who can step in as needed.
- High-Achieving High School Students: Younger tutors who can relate to students and reinforce material in a fresh and engaging way.
- Volunteers must complete a national and state background check, requiring a Social Security number.
- Those who have already been fingerprinted for nonprofit or professional work may expedite placement, especially for tutoring at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua, where this additional requirement applies.
- Sessions take place in public spaces such as the Nashua Public Library, Arlington Street Community Center, and the United Way office. Remote tutoring opportunities are also available and are still monitored for safety.
- Sessions run Sunday through Saturday, and volunteers are asked to commit to just one hour per week. They can choose the times, days, subject matter, and grades they prefer to work with.
The process to become a tutor or monitor takes a few weeks to a month, so early sign-ups are encouraged. Your commitment can reduce school-related stress for students and their families while making an invaluable difference in a child’s life.
